Jay Montes

Junior Project Manager

B.Arch l Southern California Institute of Architecture

Jay attended school at the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc), where he received his B.Arch. In 2013, Jay started at Butler Armsden and worked for the firm for five years, until he decided to pursue independent work. After just about two years away, Jay returned to the Butler Armsden team.

Jay’s interest in architecture was sparked as a teenager living in the Central Valley of California. In a vast sea of large track home developments, skateboarding around the city of Fresno allowed him to engage with a wide range of buildings he would have normally just driven right past.

Jay’s favorite thing about residential design is how past experiences, context, history, and the project team all help inform the final result. He is inspired by David Chipperfield’s work for the calmness and elegance his projects exude, from the composition, down to the beautifully crafted details.

At home, Jay can be found making his way through cookbook recipes with his wife, or making mixtapes to help power through a productive workday.
