Hidden away on a cul-de-sac in Atherton, a weighty and serious Neoclassical residence becomes a vibrant, modern, and airy family home. Building on the existing features of the house—like high ceilings that make room for light to fill the spaces, carefully crafted proportions on the facade, and sturdy structural details—Butler Armsden adapted both the interior and exterior to create clean, elegant lines and more generous living spaces. Inside, the reconfiguration of the plan creates a kitchen, family, and living space that overlooks the pool courtyard and provides plenty of room to linger and take in the afternoon sun. The warmth and comfort of the space, underlined by rich wood floors, a set of leather dining chairs, and plush seating in the living space, contrasts the sharper lines of the exterior, where stone and marble come together to lend materiality to a new pool, pool house, and carport. Butler Armsden’s sharp interventions stand out clearly, creating contrast between themselves and the existing building and, in so doing, elevating both. Modern meets classical and they get along.
