Cow Hollow Townhouse

When our client moved from New York and purchased a house already under construction in the form of an extensive remodel, we saw the opportunity to create a stylish pied-a-terre with views of the Bay. After assessing how much of the work to date could be retained (not much it turned out), we set about putting our own mark on the project.

A major decision was to replace the previously proposed, somewhat bland facade with a real stone facade using 1-1/4” thick slabs of Gray Basalt with a hand rake texture in an oversized running bond pattern. Since stone facades on residences in San Francisco are very rare, we also had to convince the Planning Department that this was an appropriate choice. The result is a handsome townhouse with a reverse floor plan consisting of living on the top to enjoy the views, and bedrooms below. The plan is tuned to entertaining, out of town guests, and having the grown kids stay over with their friends.

A sophisticated art collection was moved from a previous New York apartment, and coordinated with new furniture. At the very top of the residence is an ample roof deck with 270-degree views, and on the lower floor is an exercise room and spa including a sauna with built in chaise. A bit of New York City found its way into the design, reflecting our client’s life on two coasts.
